Understand Where Cat Allergens Come From

Many believe that cat hair causes allergies, but that's a myth. The real culprit is a protein found in cat dander, saliva, and urine. This protein, called FEL D-1, becomes airborne, and when inhaled, it causes allergic reactions.

What is an Allergen?

An allergen is a foreign particle that triggers allergies. Common allergens include:

  • Cat dander
  • Pollen grains
  • Dust particles
  • Enzymes from dust mite droppings

People with allergies often react to more than one allergen.

What is Cat Dander?

Dander is tiny flakes of dried cat skin. It contains oils from the cat’s glands that help maintain their skin and coat. These particles easily stick to carpets, curtains, furniture, and clothing, spreading allergens widely.

Symptoms of Cat Allergy

  • Asthma
  • Hay fever: sneezing, runny or clogged nose
  • Itchy eyes, nose, and throat
  • Contact urticaria (itchy skin)
  • Watering eyes
  • Conjunctivitis

Are There Hypoallergenic Cat Breeds?

"Hypoallergenic" means "less allergenic", not "non-allergenic". While no cat is completely free of allergens, some breeds, like Devon Rex, Cornish Rex, and Sphinx, might produce fewer allergens.

Their unique coats might not hold saliva and dander as much. However, tolerance varies by individual.

Testing for Cat Allergies

Testing allergy tolerance with a specific breed may take multiple exposures. Allergies tend to build up over time.

Ways to Reduce Cat Allergens at Home

  • Neuter or spay cats to reduce allergen production.
  • Bathing cats can wash away allergens like Fel d-1 from their coat.
  • Keep cats out of bedrooms and limit them to specific areas.
  • Use air filtration systems and vacuum with HEPA filters.
  • Ventilate your home well by opening windows.

Considering Drastic Measures

If symptoms are severe, consult your doctor to confirm a cat allergy before removing your pet. Allergen residues can linger, showing symptoms even after the cat is removed.
