The Journey

Prepare ahead of time to make moving house with your cat go as smoothly as possible.

Planning Accommodation

If you need to stay overnight, check for pet-friendly motels ahead of time. Remember, never leave your cat in the car overnight.

Calm and Secure Travel

  • Consider asking your vet about using a tranquilizer for very nervous cats during long journeys.
  • Use a cat carrier secured with a seatbelt, filled with a favorite blanket or toy to provide comfort.
  • Pack a ‘Cat Pack’ with essentials like food, dishes, a litter tray, plastic bags, and cleaning supplies for long travels.

When to Move the Cat

For short-distance moves, make your cat one of the last things you relocate. Keep them in familiar surroundings until the final trip.

The New House – Settling In

Initial Setup

Ensure removalists have left and that all transport tasks are complete before letting your cat out of its carrier. Close all doors, windows, and chimneys.

Creating Familiarity

  • Surround your cat with familiar objects like furniture that smell like home.
  • Allow your cat to explore at its own pace.
  • Provide a safe room with food, water, and a litter tray if the cat hides.

Calming Aids

Use Feliway® sprays or diffusers to help settle your cat. Spend time with your cat to provide reassurance.

Hold off on letting your cat go outside until it is well-adjusted to its new environment. Start with supervised trips outdoors.

Collars and ID

Before your move, get your cat used to wearing a collar with an ID disk and phone number. This will help in case they venture outside.

If Your Cat is Microchipped

Update the microchip registry with your new address and contact information well ahead of your move. Contact your vet if you're unsure of the process.

Interstate and Overseas Relocation

For interstate or overseas moves, check airline regulations and quarantine requirements. Consult your vet about necessary vaccinations.

Good luck with your move! And remember, don’t waste time with the old tale about buttering your cat’s paws.
